Institute of Medicine Recommends Free Birth Control For All

American women ought to be able to get their birth control for free, according to a new report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
The USCCB’s response – Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
I once again urge the Department of Health and Human Services to focus on the need of all Americans, including immigrants and the poor, for basic life-saving health coverage – not on mandating controversial elective practices in ways that undermine the good of women and children, the consciences of employers, employees and health plan providers, and the common good.

Be still and know I am God.
Be still and know I am.
Be still and know.
Be still.
Be.

Unlike the conversation in this video, the concept of the common good is rooted in a deep respect for human dignity.

I think we need to continue talking through this concept - it is central to many issues we’re facing today in Catholic Healthcare and beyond.

As Archbishop of Chicago, while I’m not a party to this exactly, you can be sure that I will be watching very carefully. Because, if your mission is what it’s supposed to be, then I am involved.

And most of all, I want to be involved in a way that will be helpful, but you have to tell me how… I think that the Jesuits and the directors of Loyola, and now I hope the directors of Trinity, won’t hesitate to say, ‘This is what we need, this is how you might help or this is how you’re getting in the way’…

But be sure that you’re in my prayers and that I feel part of this in the way that my office demands and limits. In such a way, however, that I will look at this and say, ‘Well there it is. That’s our mission, too - the common mission of all those involved in healthcare in Christ’s name’.

Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago
